Mumbai, October 12, 2018: Exim Bank’s study analyses the current investment scenario in the West African region and the opportunities that the region presents for Indian businesses. The study highlights the region’s significant economic progress in the last few decades and the continuous implementation of reforms which have improved the prospects of doing business in the region.

Despite West Africa’s enormous investment potential, its integration into the global economy remain low mainly due to cross border constraints. In accordance with global investment trends witnessed in 2017, FDI into West Africa fell by 10.9 percent to US$ 11.3 billion in 2017 compared to US$ 12.7 billion in 2016, mainly due to decline in FDI to Nigeria and Ghana, receiving 27.1 percent of total FDI inflows into Africa. FDI prospects are expected to be relatively favourable for the region in 2018, benefitting from stronger commodity prices and improvements in infrastructure following high public investment. Nigeria, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire have been the major drivers of foreign investment inflows during 2008 to 2017. Among the sectors, coal, oil and natural gas remained the biggest capital investment attracting sector, followed by metals, communications, and alternative/ renewable energy. Also, the top investors in the region include Canada, UK, South Africa, USA, China and France.

The study identifies that during 2008 to 2017, India invested US$ 6.7 billion in 70 FDI projects in West Africa, creating over 21,000 jobs in the countries in the region. The region accounted for 18.2 percent of total Indian FDI in Africa. The sectoral composition of these investments have been tilted towards chemicals sector, followed by communications, and coal, oil and natural gas sectors. The Indian investments are concentrated in a few West African countries likeNigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Niger and Côte d’Ivoire. The study suggests that Indian investors could seek out other potential countries in the region to diversify their investment portfolios, in line with the potential identified.

The study recognizes that increased FDI flows could act as a strong external growth driver for the region. The investment promotion agencies of the countries in the West African region have put forward their priority sectors, taking into account the capability of each country. The study analyses the potential for Indian investments in the West African region and finds out that essentially, the sectors like agriculture and agro-processing, mining, manufacturing, power, energy, including hydrocarbons and renewables, and transport and construction, offers considerable opportunities to invest. The recent emergence of the services sector as the dominant sector in most West African countries, offers huge opportunities in areas of healthcare, tourism, financial services, education and skill development.

AAPI to collaborate with Dr. V.K. Raju and Eye Foundation of America (EFA) to provide vision care to millions in India

“American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) is excited to join in and collaborate with the over decades of service to humanity by Dr. V.K. Raju and Eye Foundation of America (EFA) to provide vision care to millions in India,” declared Dr. Naresh Parikh, President of AAPI, who has been in the forefront, identifying noble projects by Physicians of Indian Origin in India and working with them and coordinating their efforts to maximize the many services they provide across India.
AAPI has been instrumental in establishing and coordinating  several projects and programs across India and established many charitable clinics, serving hundreds of thousands of people in several states in India. AAPI has been doing Global Healthcare Summit for over a decade in India and is known for its commitment to give back to India, their motherland. “The collaboration with Dr. Raju and the Foundation will help mobilize the resources at AAPI’s disposal in strengthening the efforts of Dr. Raju,” adds Dr. Parikh.
For the past four decades, Dr. Raju and the EFA have been actively and tirelessly on a crusade to eliminate avoidable blindness in areas plagued by poverty and poor access to medical care. The EFA’s mission is to eliminate avoidable blindness under the guiding principles of service, teaching, and research.
The realization of Dr. Raju’s vision, the EFA, has a reach that currently extends to 30+ developing countries and the USA. The EFA has served approximately 2.5 million patients and performed 340,000+ vision-saving surgeries, with 30,000+ surgeries performed on children alone.
The over 40 years of noble work bringing vision to millions in India started unexpectedly for Dr. Raju. While living in London, Dr. V.K. Raju traveled home to India on vacation, where a farmer asked him to examine his eyes. Dr. Raju complied, but without any instruments. In 1977, Dr. Raju returned to rural India with personnel and equipment, and offered his first eye camp near his hometown in 1977. This was the inception of the foundation’s work, beginning with the West Virginia Ophthalmology Foundation. The West Virginia Ophthalmology Foundation subsequently became the EFA in 1992.
“I feel so incredibly thankful for my personal and professional gifts, and I make great efforts to share those gifts with those in need of my services,” says Dr. Raju, and he generously gives freely of his own time, money, and medical expertise to help the less fortunate for the past several decades.
This is accomplished through eye camps and brick-and-mortar hospitals in developing countries, training of medical personnel to serve the needy, and educating the population at large on preventative eye care and healthy lifestyle choices. With adequate education, patients are empowered to take charge of their lives and their own health and prevent further deleterious consequences of their poor lifestyle choices, while sharing this knowledge with their friends and families.
The public is educated on eye care and injury prevention, and local teachers are taught how to screen for early eye problems in children. Patients, their families, and the greater community benefit from preventative medical care, free procedures, and access to education.
When education and preventative measures are insufficient, medical and surgical interventions are performed. With the aim of permanently providing world-class state-of-the art services to populations with poor access to health care, the EFA helped to build 2 hospitals in rural India: the Srikiran Eye Institute and the Goutami Eye Institute.
The Goutami Institute has a wing dedicated exclusively to children, and the EFA has future plans to build a service and research eye hospital in India where no child will be denied treatment and children from around the world can come to receive services. Dr. Raju and the EFA are also committed to finding new cures for age-old eye disease in children.
The Institute has provided service to more than 400,000 patients and 50,000 surgeries have been performed. It has become an autonomous institution, and Raju has raised over $6 million to establish and fund the two facilities. “You can never be tired of giving back,” he says. “But to have real success, your intentions should be pure. It is a spiritual act.”
Since its inception, the EFA has facilitated 600+ physician exchanges and trained 200+ ophthalmologists, equipping these medical practitioners with the tools to join the global fight against blindness. The EFA not only trains medical practitioners to join the global fight against blindness through exchange programs, but also provides workshops and training opportunities for medical students and physicians.
Born and raised in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, India, Dr. Raju earned his medical degree from Andhra University and completed an ophthalmology residency and fellowship at the Royal Eye Group of Hospitals in London, England. He is board certified in ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He has resided in Morgantown, WV since 1976, where he is currently a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at West Virginia University (WVU), the Section Chief of the Ophthalmology Department at Monongalia General Hospital, practices at Regional Eye Associates, and is the Founder and Medical Director of the EFA, a registered non-profit organization.
Dr. Raju has received many honors and awards, including 26 distinguished awards and 17 gold medals. In Dr. Raju’s adopted home state of West Virginia, he was awarded both the Lions Club International (Morgantown) Jarrett Award and the WVU International Service Award in 1995. Morgantown Rotary International presented Dr. Raju with an award for community service in 2000. He also received the Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award from WVU in 2008.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) has awarded Dr. Raju 4 times for his teaching and research contributions, including the Outstanding Humanitarian Award in 2002 as Dr. Raju had donated more than $1 million dollars of his own money that went into building hospitals in India, teaching, and providing services to needy patients.
Dr. Raju received a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Association of Asian Indians in Ophthalmology in the same year and received the Free to Achieve Award from the Maryland chapter of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) for his philanthropy.
AAPI awarded Dr. Raju with their prestigious Distinguished Community Service Award in 2007 for his service, patient care, teaching, research, and professional and community involvement. In 2011, he received a Senior Achievement Award from the AAO. He has received awards from Lions International and Rotary International. For his humanitarian work, the American Medical Association Foundation acknowledged him with the prestigious Dr. Nathan Davis International Award for Excellence in Medicine in 2013. For the past 2 39 years, Dr. Raju has expanded his humanitarian efforts in African countries by joining and joined the Carter Center’s Ambassador Program 2 years ago. President Barack Obama presented Dr. Raju with the 2016 President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He was recently inducted into the University of Toledo Global Medical Missions Hall of Fame Class of 2017.
Dr. Raju’s international awards date back to the 1970s, when he received 2 separate awards for service for the blind: Lions (India) and Jaycees (Vijayawada, India). He received several gold medals, including the AP (India) Gold Medal for Contributions to Advance Ophthalmology in 2001 and the Dr. Hardia Gold Medal for Best Paper on Refractive Surgery for the All Indian Ophthalmology Society in 2002. He received the Vaidya Ratna in 2002, as well as an achievement award from the House of Lords, London, and the Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samman Award for Achievement in Medicine in 2014. He was also recognized as one of the Leading Physicians of the World by the International Association of Ophthalmologists in 2014. Dr. Raju was an invited guest of honor at GITAM University and the All Indian Ophthalmology Society Meeting in 2012.
Dr. Raju, who has travelled to more than 50 30 countries to help people with defective vision, says, he not only sees hundreds of patients in a day, but also teaches other eye doctors. He feels that most of his trips are enjoyable working vacations, particularly in India. “With each visit, I get my insights improved,” he says. “It is like I am getting a gift. Sometimes trips like this feel better than a holiday.”
“As I had said, the farmer I met long ago is the beginning of this work. Maybe so many friends getting involved in the Foundation’s work may be my greatest motivation,” says Dr. Raju. “Confidence is that which compels you to do the thing you think you cannot do, but you continue to do it. Many friends gave me the confidence to keep going. Many close friends were peripherally involved with the Foundation initially, but as the work of the Foundation continued, so did their involvement. This gave me incredible confidence.”
Recalling how a friend of Dr. Raju had told him that after 20+ years of foundation work, “Raju, I believed in your character. That’s why I’m very much part of it,” Dr. Raju says, “I was reminded of Abraham Lincoln’s quote, “Reputation and character are two different things. Reputation is your shadow and character is the real you.” He states, “People from distance know your reputation, but only close friends know your character. This kind of involvement from close friends  maybe one of the biggest motivators for continuing the work of the Foundation.”
“Over these years, I read volumes of books by Nani Palkivala, Mortimer Adler, and some Telugu poets. This also must have motivated me. Finally, I will add this- my mother used to say, “Whatever you do, you keep on doing more and more of it.”
Doctors in America have too many comforts, he comments. “There may be some emptiness in many of us, there is also an intellectual poverty,” he says. “Some of this can be relieved by voluntary service. We have so much potential to help others — and in doing so, we may be helping ourselves much more than others.”
With all of Dr. Raju’s momentous achievements, he has also ensured that his life’s work and vision are self-sustaining. Dr. Raju has passed on his knowledge, plans, and vision to the future leaders of this movement: Dr. Leela Raju, Dr. Raju’s daughter and fellow ophthalmologist, is the EFA’s Secretary and Coordinator for Education and actively participates in its mission. Her father’s humanity and passion stimulates whatever she undertakes, Leela says. “This is not a job for him; it has never been a job,” she says. “He does his work with passion and he enjoys it. His enthusiasm and passion are infectious.”
He believes in and practices Ayurveda, an ancient Indian health care philosophy that emphasizes a holistic approach in which prevention is stressed to help lessen the need for treatment. “Eating right and exercising are the most important preventative measures according to Ayurveda,” says Dr. Raju. “The word ‘doctor’, in Latin, means teacher. A doctor’s primary responsibility is educating the patient,” he continues.  In West Virginia, Dr. Raju accepts patients that do not have medical insurance and performs surgical procedures that are not covered by insurance.
India and Ghana are actively engaged in avoidable blindness elimination projects with cooperation from their governments. More than 11,560 children received vision screenings in Ghana schools; eye glasses and follow-up care were provided when necessary, Dr. Raju describes with a sense of satisfaction and pride.
Dr. Raju hopes that the AAPI joining and collaborating with successful projects such as the Eye Foundation of America’s children’s project will provide continuity of care and the mission of AAPI will be realized, benefitting millions who need eyecare.
Praising Dr. Naresh Parikh for his great vision and for seeking collaboration with several individual projects across India by numerous Physicians of Indian Origin, Dr. Raju says, “I dream to do a well-planned mega fundraiser by AAPI for a WORLD WITHOUT CHILDHOOD BLINDNESS.” According to Dr. Raju, the first project will be implemented in India. We will reach 100, 000 children in remote villages of India in the next 12 to 18 months.” Dr. Raju says, “EFA and Goutami Eye Institute have the infrastructure to accomplish this, which could be a model project.”
Dr. Raju’s charisma and vision inspire the EFA’s trainees return to their native countries to prevent and/or alleviate blindness in the field.  The execution of his vision, affordable and accessible healthcare, has provided innumerable individuals with the invaluable gift of sight. In children, this gift results in 75 years of a full and productive life. These children, who would be considered a burden to society, are then able to contribute to their families and to society. Never too tired to give his best for preventing, caring, and sustaining the vision for the visually impaired, Dr. Raju says, “Our work is only just beginning.”
As one of the upanishads says:
“YOU ARE WHAT YOUR DEEP DRIVING DESIRE IS
AS YOUR DESIRE IS , SO IS YOUR WILL
AS YOUR WILL IS, SO IS YOUR DEED
AS YOUR DEED IS , SO IS YOUR DESTINY.”

Multilateral banks reaffirm pledge to support technology-driven sustainable infrastructure

The heads of the leading multilateral development banks (MDBs) meeting at the 2018 Global Infrastructure Forum (GI Forum) today reaffirmed their commitment to work together to deliver inclusive, resilient, and sustainable technology-driven infrastructure.

The important role of technology in this goal was at the heart of discussions at the GI Forum under the theme “Unlocking Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Technology-driven Infrastructure”. 2018 marks the first time this annual forum is being held outside of the US. Indonesia’s President Mr. Joko Widodo opened the discussion.

The MDBs agreed that their joint efforts should be based around the following priorities:

·      Increase technical assistance and policy advice for knowledge creation and knowledge transfer;

·      Disseminate knowledge through collaborative events that support the delivery of bankable, sustainable, and climate-resilient projects;

·      Mobilize sustainable, innovative finance at scale, including through the MDB Infrastructure Cooperation Platform;

·      Support sustainable public procurement;

·      Identify infrastructure and capacity gaps, particularly in least-developed countries; and landlocked developed countries, and small island developing states and African countries.

These priorities are included in the MDBs’ Outcome Statement, issued at the GI Forum and accessible at this link.

The GI Forum gathered private sector investors with representatives from the United Nations, and leaders from the African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, European Investment Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, International Finance Corporation, Islamic Development Bank, New Development Bank, and the World Bank.

The forum comprised two opening sessions. The first looked at how technology, such as solar energy systems, blockchain, or big data, can be used to make infrastructure more sustainable. The second discussed how to increase private infrastructure finance.

Other sessions looked at using technology to achieve the crucial but difficult “last mile” of getting services to end users, good practices in scaling up investments in infrastructure, ways of financing the global infrastructure gap, and maximizing innovative climate finance for sustainable infrastructure.

The infrastructure needs across the world are huge. An estimated 1 billion people have no access to electricity while over 660 million people have no access to clean drinking water. These needs must be met if the global community is to meet commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals. New technologies and approaches such as smart transport systems, big data, or innovative climate finance can all help to fill the infrastructure gap.

joint report by 13 development bank released in June noted that in 2017, multilateral development banks and development finance institutions mobilized $73.3 billion of long-term private and institutional investor co-financing for infrastructure such as power, water, transportation and telecoms. This compared with $68.7 billion mobilized in 2016.

The full agenda of the Global Infrastructure Forum 2017 is available on the GI Forum’s website, along with other information from past fora and publications and other materials from participating MDBs.

EBRD welcomes multilateral focus in new report on global financial governance

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has welcomed a new report on global financial governance that places a high priority on internationalism and multilateralism at a time when the dangers of nationalism are increasing.

The report was commissioned by the Group of 20 nations and produced by an Eminent Persons Group led by Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister, Tharman Shanmugaratnam. It was presented to G20 Finance Ministersand Central Bank governors at the Annual Meeting of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Bali, Indonesia.

Commenting on the report at the Annual Meeting, EBRD President Sir Suma Chakrabarti said he welcomed its “strong and explicit recognition of the value of a well-functioning international or multilateral system”.

“With internationalism being challenged on a daily basis, recognising the contribution of the MDB (multilateral development bank) system is critical.  The release of the report is an opportunity to continue to modernize the MDB system and also to articulate how the system can work effectively, also in collaboration with other actors, especially the bilateral development finance institutions,” he said.

The EBRD President referred specifically to the need for a strong multilateral response given the report’s calls for a greater sense of urgency in achieving the 2030 Development Agenda, including the Sustainable Development Goals, the COP21 Paris Climate Agreement and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.

A specific area that requires greater collective action is climate change, where the EBRD has pledged to make an important contribution, with its goal of dedicating 40 percent of annual investments to the green economy by 2020.

The EBRD also welcomed the report’s focus on the private sector, the President said, noting that working with the private sector was baked into the EBRD’s business model. Private sector mobilisation is critical to achieving the development goals, he said, including by deepening local capital markets and helping to improve the investment climate to attract foreign direct investment.

The EBRD President said he was particularly pleased that the report recognised the need for the MDBs to work as a system and that it addressed how best to develop the right governance to support an acceleration of efforts to deliver on the 2030 Agenda.  All MDBs share a commitment and special role in advancing progress on key development goals, yet each also has its specific mandate, geography, history and areas of expertise.

“If we do not find creative ways to leverage the MDBs’ specific strengths for the benefit of all, we stand no chance of meeting the challenges and opportunities that stand before us,” he said.

Kreditech licensed by Reserve Bank of India to operate as NBFC

Mumbai, October 15th 2018 – Kreditech, the leading group for digital consumer lending using machine-learning based underwriting, is now licensed by the Reserve Bank of India to operate as Non-Banking Financial Company. It is the first time this license has been granted to any operation in the history of the finance industry in India.

Kreditech aims to revolutionize the consumer credit market by assessing the creditworthiness of individuals solely based on alternative data. With the newly acquired license, the company is now ready to offer a broad range of online consumer credit products to Indian customers. Kreditech’s product suite for India will offer highly individualized direct-to-consumer loans as well as its Lending-as-a-service solution for vendors (LAAS), which allows partners to offer customized credit products to their customers.

“With this license, we enter a new era of lending in India,” says Ashish Kohli MD & CEO, India operations. “The certification has taken into account our robust systems, technology and customer grievance redressal mechanism and helps us stand out from our competitors. We would also like to sincerely thank the regulators for providing detailed policy for online lenders like us, proving customers in India with a secure framework for online lending and ensuring only serious and reliable players will prevail in the market.”

“The consumer lending industry in India is witnessing major disruption through technological innovation such as real-time scoring models on the basis of big data and machine learning algorithms,“ he further adds. “Currently, many NBFCs are focusing on the digital space. We, however, approach the market differently as our business model is based on an entirely digital end-to-end solution, right from origination to digital disbursement to collection. We are completely focused for customer and ensure customers are given top priority and create a win-win proposition.”

Ashish Kohli has been inducted as MD & CEO in April 2018 and is responsible for managing Asia business for Kreditech. He has more than 20 years of experience in retail financing and will be the face for regulators.

“With a market potential of roughly US$ 1 trillion in revenue for the next five years, India clearly is the most promising emerging market for Kreditech,” states David Chan, CEO at Kreditech. “Our proprietary credit scoring technology can assess an applicant’s creditworthiness in seconds and with higher precision than traditional credit-bureau based systems can. That way, we are able to offer credit to people quicker and in a most efficient way. The Indian market may be a tough one, but our best-of-breed AI technology, robust infrastructure and the newly acquired the NBFC license give us a head starts to claim our position in the market and help us bridge the gap in the growing consumer lending white space in India.”

The Irwin Family: Terri, Bindi And Robert
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, October 15th, 2018, -/African Media Agency (AMA) /-Lace up your boots because you’re about to embark on the journey of a lifetime with the family that’s bringing khaki back! The Irwins – Terri, Bindi and Robert – return to Animal Planet in a new series that gives audiences an all-access, front row seat to experience the sights and sounds of their thrilling wildlife adventures around the globe and the amazing animals that continue to inspire their conservation efforts. From running Australia’s largest family-owned zoo, Australia Zoo in Queensland, to crisscrossing the world protecting and celebrating the most wondrous animals on the planet, The Irwins work thoughtfully and tirelessly to carry on Steve’s mission to bring people closer to animals and ignite the connection that will ensure an abundance of wildlife for generations to come. CRIKEY! IT’S THE IRWINS launches as a global series premiere beginning Sunday, October 28 at 9pm and will be seen in Animal Planet’s 360 million homes around the world.
CRIKEY! IT’S THE IRWINS features the Irwins working together to care for more than 1,200 animals at Australia Zoo; overseeing a world class wildlife hospital, the largest of its kind in the world; and conducting high-octane global expeditions. Animal Planet audiences ride along with Terri as she propels Steve’s conservation mission forward, which has included expanding the once two-acre Australia Zoo into a world-class 750+-acre zoo with 105 acres open to the public. Bindi, now 20 years old, focuses her passion for animals at Australia Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital, Australia’s best equipped wildlife treatment facility which rescues, rehabilitates and releases sick, injured, or orphaned native wildlife. Robert demonstrates a curiosity, deep knowledge and expertise for all the animals around him, as well as an infectious enthusiasm to share this experience with others; a memorable trait often showcased by his father.
In the season premiere of CRIKEY! IT’S THE IRWINS, among other stories, audiences will see Robert, after months of croc wrangling training with Steve Irwin’s best friend Wes, take the final step in his journey to feed Graham, a huge crocodile at the zoo’s famous Crocoseum. Originally rescued by Steve, Graham is the Zoo’s largest and most volatile big croc, with a history of dragging Steve Irwin into the water during a routine capture, and separately injuring Wes with a surprise death roll that left him hospitalized. Bindi helps tend to Cedar, a rescue koala that has given birth to a rare set of twin joeys who must now survive the 6 to 8-month period before they can leave Cedar’s pouch. Bindi and the zookeepers face ongoing challenges to keep the twin joeys alive as nature and survival of the fittest comes into play as one of the rarest types of koala pregnancies leaves the two joeys struggling and fighting for life.
During the season, Animal Planet viewers will witness a wide range of the joy and wonder of animals as the Irwins take on many projects, including the amazing transportation of a giraffe named Scarlett, who travels over 1200 miles to participate in a breeding program as a part of the Zoo’s conservation efforts, and the release of rescued and recuperated wildlife, including Eurong the turtle, Grub, the baby Echidna, and more. Viewers will also follow the family as they travel to locations that include the stunning Lady Elliot Island, the southernmost coral cay of the Great Barrier Reef.
CRIKEY! IT’S THE IRWINS is produced for Animal Planet by Eureka where Paul Franklin, Chris Culvenor, Wes Dening and Rod Parker serve as executive producers. For Animal Planet, Erin Wanner is executive producer, Sarah Russell is producer and Paris Peckerman serves as production coordinator.

Leading solutions providers from across India will develop innovative mobility solutions for Pune City through the Urban Mobility Lab, a program by the Pune Municipal Corporation and Rocky Mountain Institute

Pune, Maharashtra 15 October 2018—Eight leading solutions providers from across India and four multi-stakeholder working groups have been confirmed as participants to develop innovative mobility solutions for Pune City through the Urban Mobility Lab, a program led by Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) in partnership with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). These solutions providers and the working groups will convene 15–17 October 2018 for a Solutions Workshop to prepare proposals for mobility solutions for Pune.

Ashish Kumar Singh, Principal Secretary, (Transport & Ports), Home Department, Govt. of Maharashtra will be among the dignitaries inaugurating the Urban Mobility Lab in Pune. Speaking about the event, Mr. Singh said, “I am delighted to participate in India’s first Urban Mobility Lab in Pune. The Government of Maharashtra is playing a leading role in the transition to shared, connected, and electric mobility. It is our consistent endeavour to improve access, affordability, congestion, pollution, and safety. I look forward to the outcomes of the Pune Urban Mobility Lab, and to seeing how solutions can be scaled up across the state.”

Anil Srivastava, DG, DMEO, and Adviser (Infrastructure Connectivity), NITI Aayog, Government of India said, “I am confident that the Pune urban lab will be a thought making experiment for the new mobility for Pune, India, and potentially across the world. The entire country would be looking forward to the benchmark Pune will set. The issues are complicated. We need to redefine the policy framework. We need to break the silos between different government departments. And then an integrated set of solutions must be put into place. Mobility policy should take into account not only urban but also the rural areas and populations. States are very proactive and must lead the way.

Mr Kunal Kumar, Mission Director(Smart Cities), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said, “A tremendous opportunity for Pune to get everyone who works on transport together. We need to look at solutions that will change the tide to help the city show the way for the rest of the country. We at the Central Government will certainly help to scale. Pune can show the way to the rest of the country”

The eight solutions providers participating in the Urban Mobility Lab are: Ashok Leyland, Lithium Urban Technologies, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ola Cabs, Ridlr, SUN Mobility, Tata Motors, and Transit Intelligence. The proposed solutions, ranging from data analytics for public transport service providers to electric mobility services, address six opportunity areas in Pune’s mobility system: traffic and parking management, non-motorized transport, public transport, intermediate public transport, booking and payment, and electric mobility.

Further explaining the objectives of the event, Mr Saurabh Rao, Municipal Commissioner, Pune Municipal Corporation said, “As India’s ‘most livable’ city, Pune is progressing towards becoming India’s premiere place to work and live. We are working diligently to drive this progress. However, rapid urbanization poses challenges to the mobility of our citizens. As we pave the way to the future of mobility, from our urban street design guidelines to our BRT system, much work remains to make life easier for the people of Pune. We look forward to supporting the mobility solutions coming out of the Urban Mobility Lab and continuing to establish Pune as a leading example of the future of mobility in Indian cities.”

Pune was selected in NITI Aayog and RMI’s “Grand Challenge” as India’s first Lighthouse City for mobility solutions. Mr. Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog, announced the Grand Challenge in November 2017. As India’s first Lighthouse City for mobility solutions, Pune is the initial host of the Urban Mobility Lab, a platform that supports a replicable process for identifying, integrating, implementing, and scaling innovative mobility solutions in Indian cities. The Urban Mobility Lab aims to create early examples of new, innovative mobility solutions in Indian cities to inform the country’s national mobility transition.

Urban mobility has been a core focus are of the Central Government, as it looks to reducing its reliance on imported fuel and controlling air pollution levels across cities. “India is poised to lead the world in advanced passenger mobility. It can leapfrog the traditional paradigm of privately-owned, under-utilized, fossil fuel-powered vehicles to a future of shared, clean, connected mobility. We at Rocky Mountain Institute are honored to support India’s mobility transformation through testing and scaling mobility solutions in cities. Pune can set the pace for the cities across India and around the world to shift to clean mobility—thus accelerating the global energy transition,” said Mr. Jules Kortenhorst, Chief Executive Officer, Rocky Mountain Institute

The PMC and RMI will host a Solutions workshop 15–17 October, in which they will work with the eight project teams and the four working groups in a collaborative environment to prepare mobility studies and pilot projects for Pune. Solutions developed through the Urban Mobility Lab and implemented in Pune will help inform national-level policy frameworks and initiatives. By connecting local, on-the-ground learning with state and central policymaking, the Urban Mobility Lab aims to support broad adoption of shared, clean, and connected mobility—a shift to which could save India 1 gigaton of carbon dioxide emissions and US$330 billion in avoided fuel imports by 2030, according to analysis by NITI Aayog and RMI.
