A heart-warming welcome from Etihad Airways

0
0

What started out as a letter from a loving son asking our cabin crew to look after his mother, Chandrakala Shah, on Etihad Airways flight from Ahmedabad to New York, soon turned into much more — an unforgettable experience.

We made sure Mrs Shah had a great journey to the Big Apple, and planned some surprises for her on the way back.

The care and dedication of our crew left a lasting impression on Mrs Shah, a feisty 94-year-old solo traveller.

Her son, Bharat, left his WhatsApp number in the letter in case we needed to contact him, and he was so excited to receive a photo of his mother with Cabin Manager Shayne Gomes and Eva Josefina Kureckso, telling him she is having a wonderful time among her family.

However, we wanted to do more, so on her return flight, on 26 September, we prepared a few surprises, from the moment she entered JFK airport to the moment she boarded the flight for the final leg of her return journey, from Abu Dhabi to Ahmedabad.

Kenya 7s trains in Nairobi ahead of their departure to Tunisia for Africa 7s
NAIROBI, Kenya, October 9, 2018/ — A 12-man Kenya 7s squad that will compete at Africa 7s held their final run in Nairobi on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s departure to Tunisia.

Head Coach Innocent Simiyu oversaw the run as he makes his final touches with the team as his contract will expire after Africa 7s to be replaced by Homeboyz head coach Paul Murunga.

In Tunisia, Kenya is set to play Morocco and Botswana in pool matches as they seek to win a cup they lastly won in 2016 when they beat Zimbabwe in South Africa.

“I know we technically or physically we may be a bit better than them but of course you have to give it to them they have prepared so we will leave no stones un-turned and give our best.”

“There is more pressure on Uganda as the defending champions. For us we are just happy to be there, we just want to express ourselves we have a lot of new blood coming in, we want to see how they will play how they will respond to that level and hopefully we can get the good result.”

Simiyu says Herman Humwa (Kenya Harlequin) and Michael Wanjala (Homeboyz) will captain Kenya in Tunisia.

“Training has been difficult, we had little time to prepare but the key thing is the boys are up to play physically so we are quite happy and we hope we will have a good outing.”

A number of those set to represent Kenya 7s in Tunisia were selected from the just concluded national sevens circuit with this set to be their first outing.

“They have a lot of excitement you have to understand, it’s their story, for most of them their journey has begun so it’s just doing small things well, going up there, express themselves and building up from there and hopefully get some good results for the team.”

“I think Africa 7s it’s quite good, we have more regional tournaments to help the game grow because for us as Kenya to remain in the top tier we need to be having some good formidable competitions back at home in the region, we are also happy to have this chance to expose our guys at that level.”

The 2017 Africa 7s cup was used as a route to the World Cup Sevens held in San Francisco, USA in July. Kenya gave it a wide berth having already qualified by virtue of making the semis back in 2013.

USAID, Rabobank Foundation, Ananya and Samunnati Make Credit Available to Small and Medium Enterprises and Groups Engaged in India’s Sustainable Landscapes Sector

0

New Delhi, India- The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) today announced a new partnership designed to support enterprises and projects engaged in the sustainable landscapes sector in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from land use.

This ten-year partnership with the Rabobank Foundation, the Ananya Finance for Inclusive Growth, and the Samunnati Financial Intermediation and Private Services will make available up to $15.3 million in local financing to small and medium private enterprises, cooperatives, producer companies and microfinance institutions, directly or indirectly engaged in the sustainable landscapes (agriculture, forestry, and other land uses) sector. The loan portfolio guarantee will encourage projects that practice low-emission land use and land management by preserving or restoring forests, and encouraging agricultural practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or increase carbon sequestration.

This partnership supports the Government of India’s priorities of improving the livelihoods of forest-dependent people, and small and medium farmers. This will be done by supporting small and medium forest-based conservation enterprises, and by promoting agroforestry and agroforestry-based enterprises. Agroforestry has the potential to increase the income of farmers, and at the same time divert pressure on the forests for timber, fuel wood and fodder. In addition to facilitating the much-needed flow of institutional credit, this partnership will help in demonstrating the long-term commercial viability of lending to the sustainable landscapes sector.

Affirming USAID’s commitment to advancing natural resources security, and improving economic opportunities, USAID/India’s Acting Deputy Mission Director Xerses Sidhwa said, “We at USAID are proud to encourage private sector lending in key sectors that are vital to economic development and natural resources security. Increasing access to credit to groups engaged with the sustainable landscapes sector will help them improve their own lives and improve their surrounding natural environment.”

Commenting on the partnership, Paul Schuilwerve, CEO and Country Head India, Rabobank said, “As responsible organizations, it is essential to make a cooperative effort and act together to address the daunting side of climate change on food and agriculture. I welcome the partnership of Rabobank Foundation and USAID, as it brings about an effort to restrict greenhouse gas emissions through sustainable forest management, integrated agroforestry and the promotion of climate smart agriculture practices. This partnership is also in line with Rabobank’s mission in striving towards ‘Growing a better world together’.”

With financial technology as the designated theme of the gathering, the Chancellor will herald Britain’s approach to using technology to save customers money, and open up the market to popular new banking apps.

Britain will use its world-leading expertise and influence in finance to shape global views towards new financial technology, Philip Hammond will say at the IMF Annual Meetings in Bali.

He will add that he wants Britain to lead global efforts to design a regulatory approach to cryptoassets and distributed ledger technology.

This will mean people are able to manage their money and be confident it is safe, while allowing the life-changing potential of any new financial technology to flourish.

He will also confirm that the UK’s crypto taskforce will this year publish its report on the UK’s approach to cryptoassets.

Speaking before departing for the Annual Meetings, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, said:

International cooperation has made our financial system safer, simpler and fairer since 2008.

At home, our banking reforms have protected people and given them more confidence that their money is safe.

The UK’s world-leading expertise means that we are in a unique position to shape the future approach to emerging technology like blockchain so that they benefit businesses, people and the economy.

This week I’ll be making sure British interests are represented at the very top of international finance.

Britain is embracing technology such as Open Banking to give customers more choice managing their money, he will explain at the Annual Meeting.

Open Banking gives consumers a more detailed understanding of their accounts, helping them find new ways of making the most of their money.

While at the IMF, the Chancellor will hold talks with fellow Finance Ministers including US Secretary to the Treasury, Steve Mnuchin, where he will reaffirm UK backing for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and its benefit to businesses and shared security.

He will also hold talks with Japanese Finance Minister, Tarō Asō, and the Governor of the People’s Bank of China, Yi Gang.

The Chancellor will urge his colleagues to work together to guard against new and emerging risks to the global financial system, and also to take advantage of the opportunities presented by closer international cooperation, including for financial technology and innovation and boosting global trade.

  • Mahindra’s deep rural connect coupled with Japanese technology to help Indian farmers increase their farm productivity
  • JV in the crop care segment to provide a pipeline of new generation products and applications
  • Deliver Farm Tech Prosperity to enable Indian farmers to Rise

Mumbai, October 12, 2018: Mahindra Agri Solutions Ltd. (MASL), a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra, part of the USD 20.7 billion Mahindra Group, today entered into a joint venture agreement with Sumitomo Corporation Group, Japan, a global player in multiple industries including crop care, having access to the latest crop protection technologies. The joint venture will have Mahindra and Sumitomo Corporation holding 60% and 40% equity respectively in the new company named Mahindra Summit Agriscience Limited, subject to the parties receiving all applicable approvals. The combined strength of both the shareholders will leapfrog MASL’s crop care business into the next orbit of growth.

The partnership will offer a pipeline of specialty, new generation products with unique and latest molecules to effectively manage pest and insect related challenges faced by farmers.

Speaking at the signing of the JV, Ashok Sharma, MD & CEO, Mahindra Agri Solutions Ltd., said, “We are delighted to join hands with Sumitomo Corporation, a leading global player, to offer the latest world class technology which would help to significantly reduce crop damage. This association will be a win-win for both the companies as it will bring Mahindra’s presence across the Agri value-chain and Sumitomo’s global expertise, on the same platform. I am hopeful that by providing world class crop care solutions, we will further the cause of augmenting farmer prosperity, thereby enabling them to Rise.”

Speaking on the JV, Tomoaki Tetsu, GM, AgriScience Department, Sumitomo Corporation said, “We are excited about forming partnership with Mahindra Agri Solutions, one of the key companies in the Mahindra Group that has a strong presence in the market through the trusted Mahindra brand. We expect the new company, Mahindra Summit Agriscience Limited to leverage Mahindra’s deep penetration in the Indian market and also enable us to collaborate with other Mahindra Group companies. Seeing the growth momentum of the Indian market, we are confident that this JV will enable Indian farmers to accelerate access to innovative solutions in terms of technology & products which would result in the increase of farmers’ income.”

The joint venture will benefit from the expertise of both the companies – Mahindra’s strong rural presence and Sumitomo’s unique know-how and Japanese technology. Mahindra will contribute through its strong farmer connect, wide spread domestic distribution and agriculture expertise, while Sumitomo Corporation has strong ties with large Japanese crop protection innovator companies which will result in the JV having access to latest global technology for minimising crop damage and increasing the yield.

MASL would be the first Indian company to have a JV partner that has deep relationships with large Japanese R&D houses. This will definitely open up access to latest Japanese technologies and products for the Indian farmers.

Initiated in 2005, MASL’s Crop Care product portfolio comprises Insecticides, Fungicides, Herbicide, Biological products and water-soluble fertilizers.

Sumitomo was started in early 17th century with initial business of copper mining. Since 1992, Sumitomo Corporation had started investing in the crop care distribution channel and currently has presence in 33 countries.

Today, India loses nearly 40% of its total production in terms of value to pest attacks and diseases. Since per capita land availability in India will only go down, farmers will have to raise their agriculture production by improving productivity. Hence crop protection products are an important input for facilitating pre & post-harvest management. The current estimated consumption of crop protection products in terms of value is around 2.5 billion USD and is expected to grow at 7% annually for the next few years. With such a huge market potential and few organized players in this space, this JV has significant potential to revolutionise the crop protection business in India.
